Volkswagen How-To | Steering Wheel Controls

Take full command of your drive with Volkswagen Steering Wheel Controls. Designed to keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road, these intuitive interfaces provide instant access to everything from your IQ.DRIVE safety suite to your personalized Digital Cockpit Pro layouts.

This guide applies to the refreshed 2025–2026 Volkswagen lineup, featuring the return of tactile, easy-to-use buttons for improved driver feedback.

🕹️ Navigating Your Steering Wheel

Modern Volkswagen models organize controls into two main zones, allowing you to manage complex features with simple thumb movements.

Left Side: Driving Assistance & Volume

The left-hand controls are dedicated to your vehicle’s speed and safety systems:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC): Quickly engage ACC, adjust your set speed (in 1 km/h or 10 km/h increments), and set your following distance.

  • Travel Assist Button: Activate the full suite of semi-automated driving features with one touch.

  • Volume Controls: Seamlessly adjust your audio levels without reaching for the centre touchscreen.

Right Side: Information & Entertainment

The right-hand controls act as your primary interface for the Digital Cockpit:

  • The “VIEW” Button: Cycle through various display modes, such as Classic Gauges, Full-Screen Navigation, or Driver Assistance views.

  • Menu Navigation: Use the horizontal and vertical arrows to scroll through driving data, phone contacts, and radio stations.

  • OK Button: Confirm selections, answer incoming phone calls, or clear notifications.

  • Voice Control: A short press activates the Volkswagen IDA Voice Assistant, while a long press triggers Siri or Google Assistant via wireless App-Connect.

✨ Key Features for 2025–2026 Models

  • Tactile Buttons: Many 2025 models (like the Golf GTI and Tiguan) have moved back to physical buttons, providing a “click” you can feel—perfect for use while wearing gloves or driving on bumpy roads.

  • Heated Steering Wheel: Look for the dedicated heat icon on the right side to toggle between three levels of warmth during cold Canadian or U.S. winters.

  • Paddle Shifters: On performance models and most automatic trims, use the levers behind the wheel for manual gear selection without moving your hands.

Pro Tip: To quickly hide secondary information on your Digital Cockpit Pro and enjoy a minimalist look, simply press and hold the VIEW button.
